So the castaways gathered palm fronds from the 31-acre island, arranged them to spell out “HELP” on the beach, and waited, according to a Coast Guard statement. A ‘Perfect Monolith’ Appears in Wales

Not one to let “horrific” weather stop him, Craig Muir left his house in Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales, early Tuesday to take his usual walk up Hay Bluff when he spotted something large, shiny and new. Standing there in the distance, like a beacon, was a silver monolith with no apparent trace as to how it got there or what it was doing in that spot. It looked like it had “just been dropped down from space,” Mr. Muir said during a telephone interview on Tuesday. The sighting immediately captured media attention, calling to mind similar mysterious objects placed around the world in late 2020. “If you didn’t know anything, to look at it, you could have easily thought it had been dropped off by a U.F.O.

After a tepid year in the IPO market, investors are hopeful 2024 will bring about a return to form. But the IPO market cratered in 2022 after the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hiking campaign collapsed investor demand for growth stocks. But happier days could be ahead for the IPO market in 2024. According to Linqto's 2024 IPO Sentiment Survey released Thursday, only a little more than half, 52%, of 2,500 traders polled are anticipating a significant recovery in the IPO market this year, suggesting "cautious optimism" ahead. "There's a lot more optimism for the IPO market," said Akshata Bailkeri, head of research at EquityZen, a platform for pre-IPO activity.

Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger told employees Tuesday during an internal town hall that he is looking forward to "building again" after spending 2023 mending parts of the business that "needed attention." After speaking alone for about 15 minutes, Iger was joined by Disney head of parks and resorts Josh D'Amaro, ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro, and Disney Entertainment co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman. CNN —The National Park Service wants to replant sequoia groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, where wildfires in 2020 and 2021 inflicted lasting damage on the iconic sequoia forests. Sequoias are among the species of trees that actually “depend on high-intensity fire in order to reproduce effectively,” said Hanson told CNN. Comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel appeared to confirm that Israel is preparing to play at least some role in controlling Gaza for a time after fighting ends. Israel will need to oversee the security of the Gaza Strip “for an indefinite period” once the war with Hamas is over, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with ABC News that aired on Monday. Asked who should govern Gaza when the war ends, Mr. Netanyahu responded that he thought Israel would “have the overall security responsibility” over the territory indefinitely. Mr. Netanyahu did not elaborate in the ABC interview on what “overall security responsibility” over Gaza would entail but said, “Those who don’t want to continue the way of Hamas” should be in charge. Israeli officials have publicly said it is premature to discuss governance for Gaza and that they are focused on immediate military objectives.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a press conference with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz (not pictured) in the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Oct. 28, 2023. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that there will be no cease-fire in Gaza unless Hamas agrees to release Israeli hostages. He also said, in an exclusive interview with David Muir, the anchor for ABC News "World News Tonight," that Israel will have to oversee "security responsibility" in Gaza "for an indefinite period" in order to ensure that Hamas cannot carry out large-scale terrorism acts again. Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 10,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian Health Ministry. The total number of deaths recorded over the 31 days of fighting is 10,022, including 4,102 children, the ministry said.

That has allowed forests to become four to seven times more densely wooded than they once were, Safford said. Fire scientists advocate more deliberate burning at low-to-moderate severity to clear vegetation that makes forests susceptible to big fires. Susan Britting, executive director of one of the groups, Sierra Forest Legacy, acknowledged any cutting triggers skepticism because loggers historically took the largest, most marketable trees. But she said thinning trees up to a certain diameter is acceptable, though she prefers prescribed burning. Homeowners are anxious prescribed fires will jump perimeters and destroy houses.

Separately, the UAW and companies have not agreed on the complex issues raised by new electric-vehicle battery plants owned by joint ventures. Under U.S. labor law, the UAW would have to organize the battery joint ventures, which are separate entities from the automakers. So far, Ford and Stellantis have not matched GM's proposal on battery plants. Three of four battery plants Ford plans will be operated as joint ventures with South Korean battery maker SK On.

The pickle-wardrobe mania is emblematic of what sets TikTok Shop apart from e-commerce competitors like Shopify and Amazon. Just like TikTok's non-shopping content, TikTok Shop is built around viral videos, be it a surge in viewer interest in pickle-jar sweatshirts or a mad rush to buy freeze-dried Skittles . For UK sellers, chasing virality still seems to be the defining characteristic of the TikTok Shop experience.
